Psalm 51 is one of the penitential psalms that King David set to music.
All psalms ( tehillim) praised the Lord. They have remained popular readings throughout the ages because King David's themes were universal. He expressed the burden of humanity in his sacred testimonies.
Psalm 51 is one of the most famous psalms speaking of repentence and recovery.
Verse 13 is part of the Selichot service:
"Cast me not away from Your Presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me."
Verse 17 is sung before the recitation of the Amidah:
"O Lord, open up my lips, that my mouth may declare Your Praise."
Verse 20 is said before the reading of the Torah:
"Do good in your favor unto Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem."

This image is an expression of the desire, through authentic intention ( kavanah)
to have one's words of praise reach Adonai.
